MACKENZIE BATTLED HER WAY through the haze of grogginess then swallowed with considerable effort. Her mouth felt as dry as Death Valley and the dull throb in her skull made her reluctant to wake up.

She eventually pried open one heavily lidded eye and stared up at the ceiling. She had no idea where she was. The past two weeks had been a road trip from hell. Justin Sayer, resident demon and personal tormentor, had dragged her from one locale to the next, as if they were fugitives trying to outrun the law.

With fiendish, paranoid dedication he’d constantly kept watch over his shoulder and checked them into fleabag hotels under assumed names. There was always an adjoining room with an adjoining door so he could get to her in a flash in case of trouble. Of course, there hadn’t been a bit of trouble, just two weeks of putting her through exhausting paces to appease her father’s obvious neurosis. Daniel Shafer wanted her buried in obscurity until this supposed threat to her life died down.

What was her father thinking when he sent the very last man on the planet that she wanted as her personal protector? A stranger she could have dealt with easily. But not this man, she mused as she drifted back to sleep.

Several hours later Mackenzie finally dragged herself from bed then blinked in surprise when she noticed a pair of faded jeans and chambray work shirt draped over the chair that sat in the corner of the bedroom. Lord, what now? she wondered as she headed across the hall to the bathroom. For two weeks Justin had made her wear one disguise after another. Blond wigs. Red wigs. Unisex clothing and sunglasses. Now he’d obviously decided to dress her like a farmer’s daughter. If he kept this up much longer she wouldn’t remember who she was.

Finding the bathroom well stocked with necessities, Mackenzie peeled off the clothes she’d slept in and stepped into the shower. Ah, she lived for morning showers and evening baths. The soothing water and solitude eased the tension—and frustration, couldn’t forget that—of dealing with Justin 24/7. As paranoid as he’d been she was surprised he wasn’t standing guard at the bathroom door.

Ten minutes later Mackenzie grabbed a towel and wrapped herself in it. Revived and refreshed, she returned to the bedroom to dress. She jerked upright when a hazy flashback zipped through her mind. She remembered standing at the open hatch of the plane, disoriented from sleep, hearing Justin announce they were taking a flying leap. She’d come unglued while he stood there, cool as a cucumber, as if he took death-defying leaps into space on a regular basis. Obviously he did because he hadn’t batted an eyelash at grabbing hold of her and skydiving from the aircraft.

Mackenzie donned her clothes and frowned at the fuzzy image of soaring through space with Justin’s powerful body meshed tightly to hers. After that, the memories became jumbled and completely out of sequence.

When she plopped down
